The vet told me 6 months but I thought it was the sooner the better for his temperament....?

Males are 4 months, females are 6 months.  If the males testicles have not dropped by 4 months, you will have to wait longer.

I would go by what your vet says, but remember your dog is of a slow maturing breed so you could probably leave it till 9 months. Neutering does not affect temperament, it just reduces sex drive and therefore also reduces any sex-related behaviour.
