My dog is off balance, having rapid eye movements and is falling over. What is causing this?

Your dog might be experiencing an ear infection, because the ear is not only just the organ of hearing, but of balance too - and head shaking is a major symptom of an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can have a variety of causes.

However, these symptoms could also be the sign of a more serious illness, such as peripheral vestibular syndrome.

In order to establish exactly what is wrong, you will need to take your dog to the vet, who should be able to start treatment right away.

The most common causes of ear infection in dogs are given in the following list:

  • Ear mites.
  • Ear parasites.
  • Food allergies.
  • Trauma.
  • Bacterial and fungal ear infections.
  • Tumors in the ear.
  • Excessive moisture in the ear.
  • Hypothyroidism.
