My cat has lost its sense of balance. What could be causing this?

These are very serious symptoms which need to be properly examined by a veterinarian, as they could indicate a very severe condition.

If this is the case, then treatment will need to be started as soon as possible.

The dilation of your cat's eyes is most probably due to the stress caused by its loss of balance.

The loss of your cat's balance could be the sign of various problems, including:

  • Neurological problems: Loss of balance may be caused by neurological conditions such as: Cancer, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) or panleukopenia.
  • Vestibular problems: Issues with the central nervous system can cause these symptoms, such as: Rickettsial diseases or inflammatory diseases.
  • Spinal cord: Damage to the spinal cause can cause loss of balance, and this could either be due to trauma or to a whole host of serious conditions.
I would advise you to take your cat to the veterinary practice immediately, as the longer you leave it, the worse your pet may become. A vet should be able to make a quick diagnosis of the problem and start treatment right away.
