8-48 hours before pushing, dogs can show following symptoms.
  1. Agitation
  2. Restlessness and pacing
  3. Loss of appetite
  4. Reduced rectal temperature below 100 F
Dogs start to push or strain at the time of labor. During this time she has pain due to labor and starts to shake. This condition can last for 6-24 hours and then first puppy is born. Then she can have a rest that can be of 2 hours with an average of 30-45 minutes. After this rest she will start to strain again and second puppy will born. Then she will go in to rest again whole process is repeated until all puppies are born. After the delivery of all puppies, placentas will be expelled. This all process can take 2-6 hours depending upon size of litter.

Depends on the dog.  My dog (Maltese) was in labor for about 30 min, then her puppy came out.
