My dog is throwing up black liquid - what does this mean?
If your dog is throwing up black liquid, then this could be the sign of a number of different things. It is difficult to establish what exactly is wrong, as you haven't specified whether your dog is vomiting or regurgitating this black fluid.

  • If a dog expels the contents of its stomach immediately after eating - and these contents contain undigested food - then it is known as regurgitation. Obstructions in the esophagus, lesions in the esophagus and structural abnormalities in the esophagus can all cause this condition. Treatment depends upon the underlying cause.
  • Vomiting is the forceful expulsion of the contents of the stomach and small intestine, and there are many reasons which can cause dogs to vomit. These causes can be related to food, feeding habits, GI (gastro-intestinal) tract diseases and non GI tract diseases.
Therefore, as you can see, it will be difficult to diagnose your dog's problem without knowing whether it is actually vomiting, or regurgitating the black fluid.

For a more detailed evaluation of your pet, you will really need to see your vet. He or she will be able to give you advice, and should be able to start treatment for the problem straight away.
