Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vaginal canal. This causes dogs to lick excessively at the vulva, can cause increase in urination frequency, redness of the vulva, vulvar discharge, and pain/discomfort. It can have a bacterial cause, foreign body, inflammatory cause, or be secondary to a stricture. This is fairly common in puppies and does not usually have a bacterial component in young dogs. Take the dog to the veterinarian so the cause can be determined. Antibiotics will be needed if this is bacterial in origin.
At home clean the vulva twice daily with baby wipes and prevent your dog from licking this area.
