Sometimes, but I manly think that that is if you touch them! Make sure to stay calm around the mother or she may feel she needs to protect her babies by eating them. Feed the mom carrots, apples, lettuce, and celery. All of those thongs help the mom's milk healthier! Hoped I helped and congrats...
When your hamster just got birth don't touch her babies because if you do than the mother will eat them because she won't recanize her sent or it got injured or it got hurt when they are 4 or 8 weeks than you can carry them make sure you have the right littler for the babies if you don't then when the babies get out from the litter in just got born then they will die so I hope you have a special babes to keep or sell
Sometimes they do if they are stressed or if there is something wrong with the babies. And you need to separate the mother after the babies are four weeks old.
My syrian female hamster, I named her smokey. She gave birth to 9 pups on 30 may 2009 and I am not aware that she is pregnant because she is very active during pregnancy and she even escaped once but I managed to find her. When I woke up at 3am by a small squeak noise I saw she just delivered 3 pups and I continue to watch until she completed delivering 9 pups and then I quickly cleaned her cage slowly 1 side first and then the other side, but I must say that my smokey is a very patient hamster, she didnt bite me and eat her pups when I removed her pups to a clean location, the next day I touch her pups again and talked to smokey in a gentle way and she is very attentive and listen to me. I gave her a lot of fresh veg and tofu and she likes it but she eat a lot every now and then and still remains her pups as 9.
Sometimes when the mother gets aggravated with the owner, or she smells the owners scent on only a couple of baby hamsters she may eat a couple. If this happens again hold your hand over the whole litter, that way the smell on only a couple of baby hamsters won't be a shock to the mother. Make sure when you hold your hand over the litter, you hold your hand over the mother too.
They sometimes don't think they are mature enough to handle the babies
Yes it will eat then again!
Yes they do you have to have the mom in a different cage!!!!
Very rarely but sometimes they do, keep an eye on the babies and the mum and dad.
Yes they do. You can not touch them the babies for like 8 weeks, but of you do, the parents could eat them.
Make sure not to interrupt the mother for 2-3 weeks after giving birth to make sure that she wont eat her babies. It usually happens when you touch the babies with your human scent or the mother feels threaten.
