Why Do My Gold Fish Lay On The Bottom Of The Tank In A Corner?

Goldfish tend to lie at the bottom of a tank on their sides if they are stressed, and this normally means they are close to death. If you discover that a goldfish is lying on the bottom of the tank, it should be removed as if it is dying it can infect the water and this will kill other fish in the tank. The fish can be killed outside of the tank by adding clove oil to water; this will kill the fish without it feeling any pain.

The most common reason that goldfish retreat to the bottom of the tank is the swim bladder. This is an organ that the fish uses to balance and to swim around the tank. If the swim bladder contracts disease then the fish loses its balance and falls to the bottom of the tank. Other reasons for fish going to the bottom of the tank are constipation, caused by overeating, and fatty liver disease.

There are a number of ways to keep goldfish in the best possible condition and the most important of these is to ensure that the tank is kept clean, and that the water is changed on a regular basis, at least weekly. This will enable the levels of ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites to be at the optimum level. Food levels should be monitored and it is important not to over feed goldfish, a small pinch of fish food once a day is normally enough to satisfy two goldfish.

Some goldfish can bully other goldfish, which will cause them to withdraw and retreat to the bottom of the tank. The bullying goldfish should be removed from the main body of the tank and placed in a separate floating device within the tank.

Well, your goldfish may be just stressed. Changing homes, changing temperatures, ect. Their just not used to all these change and could be stressed. Just give him a couple of days, as long as he's breathing, he should be fine. Feed them lightly, and put some skinless small bits of peas in their diet atleast every 2 weeks ... They could also be scared, if they seem to hide when humans are around. But don't worry, my fish used to do thaat, and they do sit in corners when they're stressed (usually after a water change).

There can be many reasons why fish hover in the corner.  Fish that are in a tank that is too small become quite stressed and tend to hang out in the corner or pace back and forth or up and down.  Fish that are sick will also hover in the corner.

Uh... I think thats swim-bladder disease - go to the pet shop and ask for medicine for that - or you can try researching cures for it through the net.

Um, he may have a bubble bladder disorder. It is an incurable illness in fish. I would quarantine him, I had the same thing happen to my fish, we just thought he was being lazy, we had him 4 a year, then 1 day I went to go see them, and the water was pitch black. He had died, and when he died, he let out some type of gas, killing all but 1 of my precious fancy fin goldfish, MORAL OF THE STORY, : ITS A BAD IDEA TO KEEP HIM IN WITH OTHER FISH.

I wish I could an answer to that. We just moved our Goldfish from a small tank to a 10 gal tank. They were lively & happy in the small tank but now, they are just laying at the bottom of the tank & don't look happy. I don't know what to do or what is wrong. It could be the change in temp but the water temp was not much different than the smaller tank. Actually, from what I am reading goldfish like cooler temps. I hope I am not killing them.Please help anyone.

He could either be sleeping or he may be suffering from a disease. If he is missing scales or looks unhealthy he may have a disease. You can take him to a vet but they may not be able to help you.

I'm not sure but my fish are dying at this moment, I'v had one completely stop moving at the bottom and one that is laying at the bottom but still breathing. And I had 3 die last night and one die a few days ago. This whole disaster is happening probably because we are cleaning the tank

It might be  that if you recently change the tank to a bigger
one. The fish might no be used to the open space yet and tend to get
scared. Make sure your tank is full with things.

Put fake plants, little
caves, coral, etc. If that's not the case, put your finger-hand near
the fish, if it moves away, its not sick, but if it barely moves, it is
probably sick.

My fan tailed goldfish stands on the bottom of the tank on his tail, its weird. He's been like this since I got him a week ago, what could be wrong? He spent the first evening struggling to swim and kept turning over onto his back. Then he spent two days lying on his side on the bottom of the tank. Then he started swimming and yesterday he seemed well. Today he is back to standing on his tail again and not swimming. He hasn't eaten and yet when he does swim about he looks happy. There are no obvious signs of disease and at times he is quite lively. I'm so worried.

I have a Goldfish who leapt out of the tank 2 times and was revived by my boyfriend and now cannot seem to stay underwater..she literally floats like a balloon back to the top of the tank..she sleeps at the top of the tank because she cannot stay down. She has had this condition for 2 weeks now and seems otherwise fine.

Your Goldfish is either sick or injured.
Go to your local pet shop and ask for a Goldfish medicine.
In a week or so your fish might die.

My goldfish usually only do that when the tank is a bit mucky or the filter isn't bubbling.
And they have been living for over three years. That's pretty impressive I guess.
