Name History; Back in the day [way back] commoners weren't allowed to own sporting dogs. The "lower classes" when transporting their "Pit Dogs" to matches where the dog had to kill its own weight in rats every minute to remain in the pit match had to be disguised so owners took to pasting sheep's wool to the animals so if they were questioned by the "Higher Ups" about the dogs breed they could respond, "Just some sort of mixed Terrier. Of course the breed is not truly a terrier. But that is the story of how the Terrier was added to the name. In 1930 or31 the breed was accepted by the AKC and they added the American to the name in essence creating the American Pit Bull Terrier.
