If it has been awhile since this has happened you should call animal poison control to ask for their advice. They will tell you how much of a certain substance a dog can take in their system and be ok and whether or not you should still induce vomiting.
If this is something you catch immediately, you pour a small amount of hydrogen peroxide down his throat. This takes a bit of wrestling. You will probably need to stand over your dog and force the mouth open. Then you wait for the dog to throw up whatever harmful substance he has ingested. It is not pretty - they will gag, and convulse a little as it bubbles in their tummy. I usually keep my dog on a leash so that he can't go back to lick it up and then I wipe it up immediately with a paper towel. This is what my vet told me to do.
IF YOUR DOG HAS SWALLOWED AN OBJECT OR ABRASIVE SUBSTANCE, DO NOT DO THIS AS IT WILL DAMAGE THE ESOPHAGUS. YOU SHOULD CALL A 24 HOUR VET AND ASK THEM WHAT TO DO - YOU MAY NEED TO BRING YOUR DOG IN.
