If the pawing is gentle, then is an act of love; he's telling you that you are his. If it is rough, he thinks you are his toy, which you may have taught him as a kitten by playing rough with him. Get him some interactive toys and retrain him that you are his companion, not his toy. Do this by ignoring bad behavior, and lots of love and attention when he has acted like a nice kitty.
