Why Does My Dog Walk Backwards At Times?

I just got back from the vet with "MY TOY POODLE WALKING BACKWARDS" and "BACKING UP" and acting really strange - she did this for hours. She would not eat, drink or poop for a whole day, then started walking backwards, looking very uncomfortable and would not sit or lay down for long periods of time, up every few minutes.  Even overnight, she kept waking up and backing up to us in bed, with her butt. Come to find out, she was not only VERY CONSTIPATED but her ANAL GLANDS were very full. They alliviated her glands and gave her an enema and within minutes she was finally pooping and I could tell she was relieved. They also gave her a fluid shot because she was very dehydrated, and they gave her a pain med. The vet said she was so constipated that there's no way she could have gotten better without the enema - and guess what they thought might have caused it?  CHEESE!  My dog LOVES shredded cheese, but I must have given her too much. My dog is restricted to the Hill's Prescription Diet I/D canned food anyway because of extreme digestive problems, so anything different or of a different texture is not good for her. I also sometimes put just a teaspoon of vegetable oil in her food and mush it up real good as it makes it even softer and the oil helps in the digestion.  Our vet started selling an off-brand of the prescription food but it made her sick, it was too ricey and had small chunks of what looked like hard oil bits - sorta like when you cook with oil and as it cools, it gets a thick white film on top. SOoooo, PETSMART sold the kind she was used to so I get it from there - BUT - you have to have a Prescription from your vet to buy it - PetSmart will then give you a card that you show each time you buy it. It's usally renewable each year.  Also,  a GREAT TREAT for sensitive doggie tummies are PLAIN CHEERIOS! They are crunchy but dissolve easily and has fiber. We give her those instead of doggie bones or cookies - they are just too harsh on her tummy.  WE ALSO DO NOT GIVE HER GREENIES, OR THOSE CHEWY RAWHIDE BONES - SHE SWOLLOWED A BIG CHUNK OF ONE AND ENDED UP IN SURGERY WITH A BLOCKED INTESTINE - almost $1,500 and a 3-day stay at the vet, then I slept with her on our kitchen floor for 2 weeks b/c she couldn't jump on the bed/couch.  SOOOO, hope all this info helps someone else out there that has had similar problems - I was all over the internet and googleing everthing imaginable to figure out what was wrong with my poodle. She's now sleeping peacefully on a pillow, on top of my feet, snoring.  Good Luck  :O)

Probably not, unless there are other symptoms you have not mentioned. You can confirm by making sure the dog's eyesight is fine, and by making it walk around with you on a leash for a while to see if it has any trouble doing so.

This is probably only a behavioral problem that your dog has, and if this bothers you, then you can train it to not do this. To do so, make sure you loudly say "no" every time the dog walks backwards. Once it corrects its behavior, you should reward it with praise or a treat. Over time the dog will learn not to walk backwards.

It is also possible that the dog is walking backwards out of fear of something. If you think the dog exhibits this behavior only around specific people, you might want to see if there is a deeper problem like abuse.

People all over the world train dogs to walk backwards, so I would not worry too much unless there is another symptom to go with it.
