Anal glands are two sacs that are present on either side of the anus in dogs in 7 and 5 O clock position. Secretions of these glands is used to mark the territory. These glands are expressed during defecation by the dogs themselves. Sometimes, secretions of these glands become thick and can not be expressed by the dog. This condition can be due to impaction, infection or tumors in anal glands. If the glands are impacted then can be expressed by the vet by applying finger pressure. So, expression of anal glands in dogs is needed only when they become impacted otherwise there is no need to express them.
