I Have A Female That's In Heat. I Found A Mate For Her But She Doesn't Seem To Let Him Mount Her. How Do I Know When She's Ready?

There are four phases of heat cycle but Chiwawa normally receives male in the end of first phase of its heat or through out its second phase which continues through out twenty days of time. After second phase it does not let male come near to it. So I guess its too late or too early of heat period. You should wait for few days. It will be clear then whether your pet has passed that period or it still has to come.

Female dogs are not receptive for, if I remember correctly, 10 days or so. Also her privates will swell around the time she is ready to let herself be bred. They are not fertile till the end of their cycle. You might call a local breeder to find out how it goes with a small breed dog, I bred shelties for a bit.

Some lady dogs are not naturals when it comes to sex. If the dog is inexperienced too, you will get a lot of play and no "action". Best to try her with a dog that is a proven stud, ie not a virgin.

There must be something that one can do to encourage mating with these dogs while she is still in heat
