Dogs pregnancy lasts nine weeks. Around the nine week mark, your dog's temperature will drop by two degrees. When this happens, she is going to give birth in the 24-48 hours ahead. Check her temperature with a rectal thermometer, but make sure you don't hurt her.
When the temperature drops, make sure the whelping box is ready and placed in a place where she won't get disturbed but is not completely separated from the rest of the family. The walls of the box need to be high enough that the puppies can not get out. The puppies will be born between 15 minutes to one hour after each other.
The puppies with be born with a membrane, which the mother will lick off, stimulating breathing. If she does not do this, you need to get a soft cloth and do this for her. She will also cut the umbilical cord, again, if she does not do this, you need to tie it with a thread about one inch from the puppy's navel, and cut it yourself.
