When a dog starts breathing hard, there could be two reasons behind it

1: It might be in pain
2: It is not getting enough oxygen.

You should take it to vet for proper check up.

I have a 12 year old beagle I have noticed in the last few days that when he is sleeping he is breathing VERY hard to point I can hear him from another room. Should I call the doc or is he just getting old.
