There is a condition that hamsters get called "wet tail", and it's a result of a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea (which is mushy, pale and often has white mucous in it) -- could this be what is happening to your pet?  The hamster will curl or hunch up a lot because it's gut is in pain, and if this is the case, it may be dehydrating.  If you think that's what this is, he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible for treatment.  Here is a site you can check on to see if any of the symptoms can give you a better answer:

(after .com, type in /hamster-illnesses-diseases.htm)

Hope the hamster gets better!
