Hamsters are very popular pets since they require low maintenance. Unlike with other animals, they can be kept in cages all their lives plus the fact that they are easy to feed. Contrary to what other pets eat, they love vegetables like celery and carrots which is why they’re often included in their diet.
Hamsters are born omnivores. Those living in the wild hunt for preys like small insects to feed themselves with or look for fresh fruits and veggies to satisfy their hunger. On the other hand, those which are domesticated can be given feeds purchased in pet stores or fruits and vegetables from the market.
If you’ve been raising hamsters for long, you’ll know that they’re not picky eaters. As a matter of fact, they’re considered one of the easiest pets to take care of. However, you must be a responsible owner towards them. This means providing them their basic needs, especially food.
In order for your hamsters to get the best nutrition possible, you have to ensure that you include varied foods in their diet. Feeds are a great source of nutrients and they don’t require any preparation at all. However, you can’t feed your pets the same kind of meal everyday. Otherwise, it won’t be long before they start losing their appetite.
Your best choice is to include fresh fruits and vegetables. Small ones like berries can be given directly to hamsters. However, big and long ones like carrots and celery must be chopped before they’re fed to your pets to prevent them from choking.
Some pet owners feed their hamsters with live prey or meat. You can do the same but do it once in a while. They can get indigestion especially if they’re not used to such food.
Lastly, it’s important that you provide drinking water to your hamsters. Make sure that they always have water to drink to avoid dehydration.
Yes it is perfectly fine for your Hammy to eat celery. Just make shure you only feed it it small portions no more than 3 times a week, too much could lead to liver problems and diarrhea.
Never feed hamsters lettuce, chocolate, tomato, spinach, dried beans, citrus fruit, spicy things. Only feed them hamster food, apples, carrots and celery. Hope this helps
Yes my hamsters tucked into their snack and loved it ever since, it appears that too much can cause some effects like diarrhoea but liver problems are for giving it a different type.
Many websites show that hamsters CAN eat carrots but not too often because it is likely to give them diarrohea to some. (Apparantly this is also so with apples, so be careful what you feed your hamster often) Celery is also allowed but must be cut into VERY TINY pieces as the celery is very stringy and it is possible to get stuck in your pet's throat.
Yeah, Hamsters can eat all vegetables and sunflower seeds, they really enjoy Grapes too, so if you just feed them that they will live, and the can't choke on it... Hope this helps :)

I have had plenty of pets in my time and the best way to figure what he can eat is consider hamsters are rodents so if they were in the wild they would practically eat what they could get there mouths on. When I first got my hamster I found a baby mouse in my garage so I put the mouse in the hamsters cage and the very next day all that was left of the baby mouse was a skull, spine and tail, so I figured he must really like meat. So now I give him hot dogs, hamburger, stew meat, chicken etc... These are just treats mabe once a week. By the way I named him hannibal the hamster, Hammi for short. And for anyone out there to disagree with my choice of food, my hamster has been alive anfd well now going on three years and he is completely healthy and extremely active. Take Care.
