Puppies, especially small breed dogs, need to be fed 3-4 times daily. I would feed your Dachshund 4 times a day initially. It is important to feed a high quality diet specifically for puppies. The total calorie requirement can be divided over the four feedings. Diets can vary on the calorie content--I use the bags as a guideline then adjust for individual puppy needs.
Keep in mind that your miniature Dachshund is a lot smaller than even a human baby. For these little guys even 8-10 kibbles can be a full meal.
Between 4-6 months you can start feeding your dog twice daily and continue this frequency for life.
Weigh your puppy weekly to make sure it is continuing to gain weight. Also and even more importantly monitor his body condition. You should be able to feel his ribs easily but not see them (except the last 1-2 ribs that end the rib cage in a Dachshund). His spine and hip bones should be easily palpated but should not jut out. He should have an hour glass figure looking at him for the top and a tummy tuck from the side.
When you see your veterinarian for your puppies vaccination series consult with them about his weight, body condition, diet, and feeding schedule.
Good Luck!
