Why does my dog have green poop?

The best person to ask is your vet, who will be able to perform a much more detailed investigation of your pet, and hopefully understand what is causing your dog's stool to be green on occasions.

From what you have described, here are my suggestions:

  • It could be caused by a parasite (like giardia which is treated with antibiotics), colitis or another gastro-intestinal issue.
  • A viral or bacterial infection or overgrowth.
  • Early signs of renal failure or problems.
  • Your dog could have eaten something they shouldn't have.
Your vet can begin to narrow things down after an exam and talking to you.

Has he eaten any treats colored green, or eaten grass? Usually the cause is from what is digested.
