A dog that respects their owner will naturally defend them. This is achieved through the maintaining of a clear hierarchy between the dog and the owner. This is sometimes seen by how some dogs might hump the leg of a female owner. Although cute, it displays that the dog believes he has certain dominance over the owner, and therefore has the right to hump her leg. Bull dogs, specifically, are more prone to being vicious, which is why people tend to use them as guard dogs. But this can be also looked upon as your own life being put at risk with a vicious animal in your company. Pit bulls have been known to turn on their owners. For this reason, if you are considering having a pit bull as a guard dog, professional training is definitely required to make sure a proper owner-animal relationship is established between you and your pet. Any good and loyal pet will mimic their owner's every move, so when training the dog, you have to be very confident of what you are setting out to do, otherwise you will not build a strong bond of confidence with your dog. Proper obedience training is the best way forward, establishing a verbal command between you and your pet - this is done by action and reward. Have treats ready, so that when the dog does something right, you can reward them with a treat. This way, the positive feelings from treats are linked with the action and command. The intonation of the words can also affect the reaction from the dog. For example, some commands are better said in a very low whisper, to draw the dog's attention to the command more. This way, the tonality may indicate fear or worry from the owner.

I live in the uk and own 2 pitbulls Brother n sister  they are brilliant Guard dogs... But I have not had to train them to protect, I have always treated them well and and in return they are very loyal to me and are willing to protect me and my family and property.. So I would advise you just to treat the dog how you would expect to be treated and you will find that the dog will find it has a 2nd nature, that been to protect its master..

At nite walk your dog around you backyard and when your dog hears a noise he will look at the direction of the noise so when he does give him a hot dog. And slowly he will know what to do

Yall are all dumb. Pit Bulls are born protective and territorial. They will naturally protect there owner. As far as making it meen there is no sense in it. If you treat the dog right it will protect you,. If you don't it may turn on you to. Also females are more protective then males.

Yall do realize that when u say ALL pitbulls are born protective thats not true.thats like saying all humans tell the truth.just because its that kind of a dog dont mean its going to be protective.maybe his dog is really playful like my pit is and not all that agressive.my dog runs up and play with other dogs that come up into my yard...he also sleeps very heavily and i cant help but think that he would either play with an intruder or just run away...he asked a simple question answer it or stfu

Ive had rotts before and pits are actually better guard dogs give it some time and when you hear something n your dog is around you, say with a very concerned voice what is it girl what is it make her notice your concerned voice and if she react to the noise give her a treat and pet her . But then again her old owners might have turned her into a real wimpy dogg already

A dog that respects his/her owner will naturally defend them but obedience training is a good idea.

Pit bulls have a bad rap from people like you. The dog will automatically protect its home and master. Making an animal vicious should be against the law. If planning on being an irresposable pet owner than you had better be prepared for the lawsuits you will get when your dog bites someone or worse. I have friends with pitbulls and stronger breeds and all of them are very friendly. Maybe you should move to a better neighborhood where crime and violence aren't so high.

The dog will love you and understand that you are the alfa male! If you have a spouse the dog will understand that she is also in command, but she has to also be apart of the training process! Picture it like raising a child! Last step is when the dog is about 1year old he can allready be a great guard dog just by following all these steps so test him by having someone that he doesn't know try to get close to your yard and see the reaction the dog gives! Also try to have the person talk to him

For example (good boy) almost like sweet talking to the dog! If the dog barks and gets agressive your dog is doing his job and protecting your and his home! But if he gets friendly there is 1 last step! You must only let your dog be around your family and knowone else! This way the dog will understand this is the only group that he should be friendly too! This is very dangerous if you have family around all the time! But if you need a guard dog and its allways you and your family its fine!

Be aware that people are afraid of pits right of the bat, so sometimes you don't even need a pit to be a guard dog just by him being there is enough!! Hope this info helps!!

You should NEVER get a dog for the sole/only real purpose of being a guard dog. They are not security systems, they are living beings in need of social interaction. Shame on you!
