I've owned a female pitbull for 10 years, up until she died last month.. They are more independant and a bit more reserved as they get older, they get really attached to their owner  and make better personal protection dogs and companion dogs.. Males on the other hand stay playful all the way until the end, they are more territorial over property and make better guard dogs if you have a big yard. For the person who says staffies are better, probably never owned a pitbull they are both a stubborn breed, staffies have shorter legs.. Whereas the APBT is a working breed who is willing to be molded and utilized anyway you want it to, they are eager to please their owner and will do anything you encourge for good or bad.. If you love your dog and want it to live with you for many years you have to deter it from any aggressive behavior towards other dogs and people and train it well..

You know what I don't understand, is why do people trash talk bully's? I have only owned bully's and I have had them around my children and other pets for lots of years and NEVER once had a problem!! So stop talking out of your butt please, pitbulls are very SMART, and you don't need a PHD doctor's degree to train them! All dogs need training and you have to have patience for all breeds! Remember its not the dog, we as owners make there fate! If we train them to fight and have hate, what are they going to do? I love bully's around me and my children and for the record my female brindle her 2 best friends are a pappillion and a cat! And also she would never hurt my children! So please stop downing them just because you don't like them! Anyways!... Sorry about that I just can't stand people that down them so badly! So really it depends about your life style! If you have children I would recommend female just because all female dogs have that mommy luv! But thats all the advise I can give! I have had a male bully as well and he did great with children and other dogs! Males to me are way more protected when it comes to you as the owner and females I would say get if you have children under age 2 years old, because females have the mommy touch! Anyways hope that helps and good luck on your search for a new bestfriends! God bless you both!

They are both great! Males will be more protective, but they are equally as playful. Either gender you get be prepared to be loved to death and be amused because this breed has a BIG personality. TillyTally is obviously not very educated in the pitbull department. Am Staffs and american pitbull terriers were the same breed just with 2 different names. So she doesnt like pitbulls but I guess she doesnt realize that shes putting down her own dogs.

And I do like pitbulls, but in the uk where I live they're illegal so you can't own them, and my dogs are legal! So how can they be the same breed exactly?

Yes, I'm talking about the same breed as you, They were both the same breed given 2 seperate names to be accepted. They have had seperate breeding for so long that they are concidered a different breed now... But they were the same exact breed! And pits are illegal there basically just because the rep that goes with there name, nothing more.

Neither, buy a staffordshire bull terrier!
I have two, they are similar shape and size to pit bulls and are easier to train and get on better with other dogs, they also love people and are great with kids.
They have been voted 2nd best family dog and have the nickname of the 'nanny' dog.

As I say they are similar looking to a pitbull, but unless you have a lot of dog training and socialising experience with strong minded large breeds dogs I wouldn't advise anyone to get a pitbull.

A pitbull is not a specific breed, the term pitbull refers is a definition of a pitbull type dog the American Pit Bull, American Staff, and Staff Bull Terrier. You are saying dont get a pitbull get a staff?? On your comment you said dont get a pitbull get a staff becuase pits need tons of training and socialising experience. ANY PITBULL type dog need tons of training and socialising. So ANGEL2GOD do not make your choice by his info Plan on tons of training for either.

Pitbulls and staffordshire terriers used to be the same breed just with a different name in order to register with the UKC.
