Pitbulls started in ireland as pit dogs (fighting other dogs in a pit). They used a bulldog to make a pitbull because the bulldogs sport of bull baiting was outlawed. They were bred to fight but also to be very loyal to people so they were later used to babysit small children.
A long time ago, like really long time ago. A man needed a small but quick and strong dog to help take down bears and kill. He brought together a bull dog and I think a boxer or great dane. So did It work it sure did. These small compact dog's were quick and strong that took down bear's. If you search they have paintings that were painted a long time ago of pitbulls taking down huge bears. Each breed we have today were breed for a reason. If you would like to know just ask and I will try to help.

Reading up on the history of pitbulls it said pitbulls originate from ireland, they was used as working dogs. (not fighting dogs).
The ancestors of modern Pit Bulls come from the bulldogs and terriers of England. Unfortunately over centuries, many people have used them for fighting. However, they are not innately aggressive - and this is almost always a learned trait. The media has always focused on the violent side of pitbulls, despite this not being their natural tendency. Irresponsible owners and breeding are the culprits - not the dog itself. Actually, pitbulls had the nickname "nanny dog" back in the day, due to their innate love and tolerance of children. Pitbulls today actively work as therapy dogs and many are well-loved family pets, and some have even saved people's lives. There are many instances of Pit Bulls being productively employed by U.S. Customs, as police K9s. Pit Bulls have been reported in the news media as "adopting" other species of animals, such as kittens.
