Mice are NOT dirty if they are a captive/fancy bred mouse. Garden/field mice, maybe more likely, but mice- like their rat cousins are very clean and social. They make great pets.
Both have low life spans- 1-2 years for a mouse and 2-3 for a hamster.
I would say a mouse- mostly because hamsters are harder to socialize and are more prone to biting. Although, because mice are social, they'd be best off in a pair.
