Heartworm disease in dogs is caused by a worm called Dirofilaria immitis. These worms invade arteries which carry blood from heart to lungs. These worms are transmitted in dogs by infected mosquitoes.

Coughing is one of the symptoms of heartworms. Other symptoms are heavy breathing, coughing blood, lack of interest in exercise, and congestive heart failure symptoms.

Diagnosis of heartworms is done by chest x-rays, echocardiogram, ECG, complete blood count, Microfilaria screening and heartworms serology.

Medicines are used successfully to kill adult and baby heartworms. By doing this you can manage heavy breathing.
