Rabies is contagious which is one reason we are so cautious. It isn't necessarily common in some areas though in our domestic pets (we are sure to vaccinate) like dogs and cats but may be carried by raccoons, skunks, fox, bats ect. You may want to speak to your vet if you are concerned or would just like to know the signs and symptoms. Definitely something to be sure of since testing requires their head (only) so there is nothing to do if it comes back negative (quarantine and observation are usually enacted first since that's the case) and would be too late.
