Puppies have the bladder control to hold their urine 1 plus their age in months.  So your little fella has the bladder control to last 4-5 hours.
Crate training will definitely help with potty training.  The crate needs to be big enough for him to stand, turn, and lay down.  It should not be too big where they can have a spot to use as the bathroom and the other end to sleep.  When you return take your puppy to where you would like him to urinate, wait until he does then praise, and give treats.
Positive reinforcement is key.  Never leave a puppy alone when you are home.  They need constant supervision to prevent and correct accidents.  If you catch him having an accident rush him to the correct place then praise.
There is another 24 hour method.  Place your puppy in a crate, then every hour take him outside or to potty pad to urinate or defecate.  If successful play with him for 10 minutes, if unsuccessful after 5 minutes  place him back in the crate.  Repeat this procedure every hour for 1 day.
Puppies can get very distracted outside.  Do not play with your puppy until he has urinated or defecated.  At any success give a treat and praise a lot.

Min-pins are notorious for changing the potty rules. I have a 10 yr old that has changed the rules so many times. Thirteen weeks is generally the time when they begin to think that they can change the potty rules. Be consistent and take the puppy out once an hour to get back into the routine. You will have to do this several more times throughout the min-pin's life.

He hasn't got the message that outside is where he is praised for going. Really ham it up with the praise. As soon as you catch him going in the house or off his pad pick him up and put him outside. If you catch him in the act you can scold him in a stern voice. Dogs respond to tone of voice and one word commands best. Like "NO!". If he goes to the bathroom in the house he needs to go back in his kennel with no attention given. If he goes outside he should be given lots of praise and lots of attention. He is still little so his bladder will need to be relieved at least at a minimum of every three hours if not before. Consistency is the key. Is someone home with the dog during the day? The house training goes much faster if someone is there all day. Some people actually take vacation when they get their puppies to get them on the right track. Hope this has been of help to you. I've bred Shih-tzus for 20 plus years and have given this same advice. The ones who have the best success are the ones who take the extra time with their puppies. Peace

Hello, my dear Thmpsn! Yes, I'm home with him all day and I'm very consistent with Winston. He did great in the beginning but is having his mistakes now! One plus is Winston sleeps all night with us and wakes me up at 6a and the first thing we do is go outside and he does his thing, it's during the day he has his mistakes. We praise him when he goes outside and don't play around with him till he does his thing so I'm confused why he has had a change of plans with the potty training.

It sounds like you are on the right track. Be patient with him but firm. It can get frustrating at times. Then one day it clicks in his brain what he is supposed to do. You will have a pet that you can enjoy of years without worrying if he's going to have an accident. He is still a puppy. Peace

Min-pins are notorious for changing the rules...even the potty rules. I have a 10 year old that attempts to get away with it. Start taking him out every hour again. This is what I have found helpful...it seems to remind them that they are supposed to go outside. Also, do not fall for the 'can't potty outside because the grass is wet'. This is another favorite of min-pins. Good luck!

So glad I can help! This is my second min-pin and it has been quite a ride. She is currently a service dog (she picks things up for me) but she is getting ready to retire as she is extremely moody at times and refuses to work. In April, I got a retriever mix to train as a service dog and she likes to torment the minpin. I attempt to keep them apart because, after all, the minpin has been an only child for almost 10 years. It is difficult for her to change.

Feel free to ask any questions! Have a great weekend!
