There are more than 2000 different kinds of snakes in the world. Snakes are such demon creatures that people have developed all kinds of wrong ideas about them. One of them is that there are huge and terrifying snakes 18 to 21 meters long. The truth is that snakes never grow to quite that length. The largest known snake in the world is the regal python which is merely 10 meters in length. This demon of regal python is found in the Malay Peninsula, Burma, Indochina and the Philippine islands.

The second longest snake is anaconda of tropical South America which may reach the length of about 7 meters.

Next comes the Indian python, found in India and Malay Peninsula, which may grow to 6 or 7 meters. The African rock python is about the same length. The diamond python of Australia and New Guinea often grows to 6.5 meters. The king cobra, another unpleasant member of the snake family, reaches a maximum length of about 5.5 meters.

The largest poisonous snake is king cobra, and the heaviest poisonous snake is the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake.
