Firstly, it is essential that you keep your dog fully hydrated and have clean fresh water available at all times - refill this frequently. You could also have a small bowl of warm water accessible as this will have a settling effect on the stomach. To hasten recovery you can add a probiotic powder to the water.

The best thing to feed your dog is a healthy brand dog food in small quantities. Try and find a food which has added probiotics, especially if you don't have any probiotic powder for the water. Feed the dog in small amounts and if any is left remove it, clean the dish and refill with another small amount later.  If the dog does not appear to get better, do not offer any more food for 12 hours. If the diarrhoea persists, it is important to take your dog to the vet as this may be a bacterial infection. The vet will be able to give you a course of tablets or a powder to help your dog get better. During the 12 hours of fasting, do not withhold water from your dog.

You may also feed your dog plain boiled rice and chicken (make sure you shred the chicken before you serve it). This could also be used for a day or two after your dog appears to be getting better - it will continue to settle the stomach. Try and deduce what has made your dog ill, for example did you see it eat anything unusual on a walk or did you try a new dog food? This may help prevent future problems.

Diarrhea and vomiting in dogs for two days is due to to some underlying cause that should be investigated thoroughly by the vet because many factors can cause this conditions. Most common causes of diarrhea and vomiting in dogs are
  1. Gastritis
  2. Food allergies
  3. Changes in diet
  4. Eating of garbage
  5. Eating of spoiled food
  6. Intestinal parasites
  7. Due to some diseases
So, you should take your dog to vet for accurate diagnosis and treatment because treatment is dependent upon underlying cause.

My Miniature Pinscher has cervical disk disease, and the meds he is taking for the pain is making him vomit and have diarrhea.  The vet has given him meds (Gabapentin, Tramadol, Methocarbanol) for the pain in his neck and shoulders, but it makes him very sick. He has had the diarrhea for several days.  We contacted our vet, but have not received a response yet. Please advise.

Your dog may have eaten something that is causing major stress to the intestine and colon. Worst case scenario, a blockage. You should take your dog to your vet because 3 days of diarrhea, THEN the vomiting are signs of something more problematic. Is your dog eating normally and drinking water normally? Does your dog show signs of pain, stress, shaking? What is your dogs temperature? You need to find these things out to really be proactive in addressing your dogs health/condition.
