Yes, it is possible for a female dog to get pregnant after first mating during her heat cycle. Heat cycles in dogs start when they become 6-8 months old and their heat cycle is repeated after every 6 months. Mating in dogs occurs during second stage of heat cycle. During this stage, vaginal bleeding that started in the first stage is stopped or reduced and dogs show their acceptance for the male dogs by having a specific behavior called flagging of tail. During mating, tie is one of the part but not necessary. Dogs can get pregnant even without tie.

They don't always conceive the first time but it is fairly common. The gestation period is anywhere from 56-68 days, depending on the dog and the breed. I've read that if you see signs of milk production, it could mean delivery in 1-2 days however some dogs will lactate as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy. Check for movement within her belly by feeling her tummy, she will also most likely get "restless" a day or two before giving birth. You should really read up on this just in case so you'll be prepared and know what to do. There's a lot of info on canine gestation/pregnancy on ask.com

The first time that I wanted to breed my Bull Staffordshire Terrier she was only mated once and she got pregnant, however she only had 1 pup. The second time that I breed her she mated twice and had 4 pups so I recommend that you mate your dog 2 or 3 times for the best results.

Hope this helps. :)

Maybe. Just like any other mammal, depending on many factors, a single act of intercourse may or may not result in conception. Due to the short window of opportunity, however, nature has ensured that the probability of conception from a single mating is much more likely to result in pregnancy than in humans.

Hi Jennycruz,

Was this planned or an accident? You can tell I'm a mom, huh? LOL.

When we mated our Dalmatian we had to go see the daddy-to-be every other night for about 10 days to ensure pregnancy.

Has she gotten bigger? Can you feel the puppy "lumps" inside her? Have you seen the vet, and has he taken an X-ray yet?

Best of luck to you both, and please be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Please accept my prayers for a safe delivery and healthy pups,

Jo

I have yorkies and my male and female mated and were stuck together like 5-6 different times. Does this mean more puppies or would it all be the same if they got stuck one time or 10 times.

I know this sounds crazy, but can a dog get pregnant twice by the same dog in one heat cycle?

Yes, any breeding can result in conception though it is not a guarantee.  Since this was not a planned breeding have your dog spayed to prevent an unplanned litter.  Unplanned puppies are why shelters across the country are overfull.
