All dogs including Maltese can come in to heat 2 times in a year which can be 6-7 months apart. This is regardless of pregnancy because pregnancy does not affect next heat cycle. Some of the Maltese dogs can have their first heat cycle as late as 16 months. So, if a Maltese does not start her heat cycle even at the age of 16 months then visit to a vet.
