The female dog will begin to have a bloody discharge during Proestrus, the first stage of the oestrus cycle. Proestrus is where the female’s reproductive tract prepares for fertilisation. Her vulva will swell, and she will become attractive to male dogs but she will not accept them at this time and may become aggressive towards them. The second stage is call oestrus, or standing heat. The discharge usually becomes more straw coloured than bloody at this point. This is where she will accept males. Matings that happen during this period are likely to produce a pregnancy, but not always. If your female is in heat and you do not wish to breed from her, you should be especially cautious that she is separated from any male dogs.
The most fertile period is actually when the discharge changes from the reddish brown to a tan/straw color. The length of canine estrus can vary, but is generally 14-21 days. Unlike human sperm, canine sperm can survive within the female for as long as 7 days or so, so really anytime a bitch is in heat fertilization is possible, though fertilization is more likely to occur later in the cycle than earlier.
Your dog will be fertile around 9-11 days after bleeding starts, when it becomes thinner and more pink than red. The whole estrus cycle lasts approx 3 weeks.
Dogs can only get pregnant from around day 7 of the bleeding period till around day 14 of the bleeding period. But sometimes you could miss a day or two of the bleeding...Sometimes not enough blood to tell first few days, so calculations would be off. So keep all males away during WHOLE heat cycle, except the one your wanting to breed to. Several males could sire one litter, if bred close together.
My pitbull started bleeding on the 16th of the month and we managed to keep her away from dogs for the rest of the month but on the 11th of the next month she was humped.. Can she be pregnant

I believe that a dog is in heat for 3 weeks. From what I understand they can't get pregnant the first week or the last. But, I am not really sure.
My dog has been on her heat for 10days and I just finished mating her but my vet said I should bring her back after a day interval to repeat it. Is it possible she will be pregnant if I don't repeat the mating?
My dog is in heat but I'm not she if shes still bleeding we want her to get pregnant but not sure if it will happen can it ?
If its a girl dog its up to 2 to 4 weeks unless its a boy then it can always get pregnant although birth is dificult. SIMPLES
I think my dog may be pregnant. Some one told me that the dog "holds" the sperm and doesn't fertilize her eggs until 3 days after comming out of heat. Is this true or does she get pregnant during the heat cycle? I find this impossible because in humans when on your period your eggs have already dropped.
