Kittens will start to toilet by themselves once they've been introduced to solids/kitten food from about four and a half weeks old. The mother will still take care of business (so to speak) until they get the hang of the litter box, but they will learn quickly. Just pop each kitten into the litter box immediately after each meal, which is usually when they will need to suddenly go! They will soon get the hang of it ...
