The urine has become attractive for some reason. This could be due to leaking protein , indicating kidney trouble, or sugar indicating diabetes. Get the vet to test a sample of it for you, this should not be expensive.
I have never noticed any of our pregnant bitches being at all interested in their own pee or poo.

My bad, still gross though. try potty pads instead of paper. they are more absorbent and make less of a mess. also, you should try not to keep the dog in the cage so long that it has to go inside it. the more you do that, the more it'll get used to peeing inside. that just makes potty training more difficult.

You can get the pads at most pet stores, ask for potty training pads.

Like eating of feces and grass, urine licking or drinking is another unexplained behavior of dogs.  Many theories have been put forward but none of them have been proved. One theory suggests that dogs drink urine if they have any nutrient deficiency. Other theory says that male dogs lick urine of female dog to know whether she is in heat or not. Some researchers suggest that this behavior is in non spayed female dogs and non neutered male dogs. One theory suggests that it is more common in dehydrated dogs who need to drink water.

Anyhow, as exact cause of pee licking in dogs is still not clear, but due to unknown reasons, treatment with medicines like
amitriptyline  or clomipramine can work.

May be due to vitamin deficiency. If this continues, maybe a change of diet and make sure he always has fresh water available

One good reason that greatly appeals to me is that there is a possibility that your dog might be pregnant, if she is of a female sex. Various female dogs start licking up their own pees or start smelling their stool if there are pregnant. In my opinion, you don't need to fret overt his. Most likely, your dog is expecting a cute little pup!

Misty that's ok hun my poodle when a puppy would run out his cage and go to the cat littler box and eat these faeces, so its a phase don't worry bout it, if you work you can not help that but put a paper or papers down in the crate something that will soak the pee up and then it wont be able to lick it lol good luck .

My shiba pup had the same problem for a while. If I put a towel in his crate, he would pee on it then move it to the corner. If I didn't put in a towel, he would pee and drink the pee. I stopped the problem by buying a very small crate. He had no room to pee and lick it up. (He was unable to turn around.) It took less than 2 weeks to fix. After that he got his normal crate back, and he never had the issue again. I don't know if this would work for every dog, but it did for my shiba inu.

Don't let him lick it up. that's gross. you need to train your dog to leave his pee alone. try training him to pee in grass, then he won't try to clean up the mess.

They lick their pee because they are thirsty or the dog prefers to drink pee or water it usually depends on their mom and what she drinks when she is pregnet

I just took my pet to the vet this past weekend and he checked out really good.  But he is still licking his own pee.  Should I get him tested for an infection?

If no infection has been found in bladder or kidneys then it can be prostate gland infection, which produces semen. You should observe carefully that your dog is having swollen penis and testicles, if this is the case then this disease has chance to be there. Discuss with your vet about possibility of this disease in your pet. Hope you will find a solution. Keep your pet clean
