If you’re looking for some inspiration in building some housing for your mallard ducks, this link is definitely going to cater to your requirements: planstobuildamallardbirdhouse.blogspot.com/ Even though there are some naive homeowners and gardeners who just want to provide a sanctuary for these wonderful creatures, there is a far more important motive for investing in one of these bird houses: A shield against dangerous predators. If you have a close bond with a particular mallard duck that likes to come and visit, surely it’s effort worth making?

Normally, the best plans come by creating a platform that will sit on the pond, potentially made out of Styrofoam or another resilient material. As this will float, you can then get some wood to go over the Styrofoam in order to ensure that it is durable and aesthetically pleasing. The reason why this stage of planning a mallard house is so important is to ensure that the shelter won’t get wet or damaged in bad weather, which may cause waters within the pond to get a little choppy.

Finding free plans is quite difficult to find, and as this wonderfully intricate creation of carpentry is something to be marvelled at, many people look for remuneration when selling on their plans. Because of this, you might want to opt to buy some detailed specifications from websites like www.forshamcottagearks.com/waterfowl-housing/large-and-small If you decide to carry on looking for free plans and blueprints, you will most probably find that the content leads to a package that you need to purchase for more information.

If you do not have a body of water, you can build a house in your backyard like I did. I made a 7 by 6 foot house out of spare wood I had. When I was done, I  took off part of the roof and make a second story for my ducks. For my ducks to go to the second story,I put a piece of wood going up. My ducks loved it.

You didn't mention whether you have a body of water for your ducks. We have a 1/3 acre pond adjoining a wooded area. After noticing a pair of Mallards investigating the pond, I decided to build a floating house for the ducks to help keep them away from predators. The female too to it immediately and began laying eggs.

I simply used 1 1/2" rigid styrofoam (available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc). It is sturdy enough and provides plenty of flotation. Mine was built too small for the duck to be able to turn her eggs daily as required so hatching rate has been about 20%. I'm building a larger one for next year and will see how it goes.

Get two 4'X8' sheets of foam. Cut one piece approx. (score with utility knife and snap) 2 1/2" wide X 4'. This will be the bottom. I attached an inexpensive VENTED laundry basket right side up to the bottom of it with plastic tie wraps. This provides ballast and a place for small fish to hide out.
