Look it up on Wikipedia...but I can tell you as a vet it is far better to have a dog that is crossed than pedigree because Kennel Club dogs are so inbred they suffer terribly with deformities. What matters most is that you love your pooch.

Well you don't really. It's one of the purposes of AKC papers and if you bought from a responsible breeder they usually DNA test and then the DNA can be matched to the AKC parents if their is a question as to parentage. If you buy a pup with no papers or one registered with a pet registry who doesn't track lineage or those sorts of things for way back there isn't really any way to tell definitively. There are 'breed' DNA tests but their not really accurate yet and are a bit of a joke at this point in time. Here's a hilarious video of a DNA test, watch all the way to the end, lol.

Only if dog has papers.  If there is still a question, contact akc, etc. And ask for a dna test, to see if it is the same mom and dad as on the papers.

To have reasonable reassurance of pure bred you would have your registration from a reputable kennel club (UKC, ADBA or AKC ect. And many are dual/multiple) from your responsible breeder.
If it doesn't matter before you get your puppy (the only time  you can make an effort to assure pure bred) there isn't much reason to worry about pure or not after and doesn't effect their ability to be a good pet, they just aren't candidates for breeding or anything like that and the best place to adopt would be a rescue or shelter unless you are looking for a good breeder.
Here are some links to information and the links to the registries for the standards (only very minor differences) and you can find links to all three at the top of the first link.
