Official documents provided by a sanctioned kennel club which indicate that the mother and father where purebred is the only way to tell. Even a vet could not make that determination without proper documentation. He or she might be able to tell if the dog is NOT purebred, but absent that, purebred verses how a dog looks is determined by papers.
