Delivery of puppies in all dogs can occur after 58-69 days with an average of 63 days. Duration of labor depends upon size of litter. Small litter size is delivered early in comparison with large liter size which can take more time.
At the time of labor, uterine contractions can last for 6-24 hours. These contractions cause pain and dogs can shake. Then whelping process is started during which first puppy is born. After delivering first puppy, mother can take rest for maximum 2 hours with an average of 3-45 minutes. This is followed by birth of second puppy. This whole process is repeated until complete litter is born. This can take 2-6 hours depending upon litter size.
