It depends what type of finch you are talking about, there are hundreds of different ones.

With the most commonly kept finch, the zebra finch, the male has orange cheek patches and chestnut flanks with white spots, while the female does not (in more mutations). Males have red beaks and females have orange beaks.

Gouldian finches have a few differences, but males have a lot more blue on the back of their neck compared to females.

I think most finches you can't accurately tell apart visually, they need DNA sexing to be completely sure.

Google the type of finch you are thinking about for information about the difference between males and females.

If your talking about zebra finches, usually or sometimes the female is all white perhaps a little bit of color and the male is gray, speckled tail, and he's much more colorful than the female. I figured this out on my own because we bought a male first by his self. He started being lonely, so we went back to the pet store. The associates had no idea what was what so we took a chance and got the finch that was all white. I had them two weeks and I woke up this morning and I had 2 egg in the nest! They say she can lay up to eight eggs! She lays mostly at night. Its fun and my first time ever owning finches. Good Luck!!!!
