You would have to go to a vet to get it cultured to see if it is bacterial or fungal. Also have the vet check your cat's teeth to see if there is a dental infection and check the ears/skin for mites. If it is feline herpes, that is viral and you can add lysine to your cat's diet to help keep it under control. It is difficult to wash around a cat's nose/face/eyes because these are sensitive areas so you will want to ask your vet:
1. What is the condition (bacterial, fungal or viral)?
2. Would antibiotics clear up the condition (if it is a staph infection) or any secondary conditions?
3. Do you need a miticide?
4. Does your cat have feline herpes?
