What are dogs whiskers for?

They have pretty much the same function as cat whiskers. They are an additional sensory organ and they help with balance. I do know someone that trims off her dogs whiskers but he is a Bull Terrier and his are very sharp and pointed. The dog has not suffered any ill effects from them being gone. My lab has extremely long ones and since she is blind I think they are of great benefit to her.
