It time for my dog Roo to get her rabies yearly shot.  Last year at 6months after getting her boosters and her 1st rabies shot she got  would not eat, hid behind me every time my husband came in the room and had a severe personality change.  No more puppy behavior.  We took her to the vet after a week of this and they discounted a connection.  I am afraid to go back with her to get this shot and there are no holistic vets in this area that I can find.    What to do?  Jorie From Pensacola

Sometimes dogs will develop allergic reactions to the shots they get. While it is normal for the dog to get a slight fever for a couple of days after the shot is administered as this is the body's normal reaction to the vaccine, rash is an allergic symptom and needs to be treated as such.

You can start by calling your vet and letting him/her know about the symptoms and asking them if there is any suggested advice. Usually vets won't ask you to bring the dog in unless it is showing extreme symptoms, like difficulty breathing.

If they don't ask you to bring the dog in, you can start by giving the dog Benadryl. This is a good antihistamine, which will take care of minor allergic reactions at home. Give the dog 1 milligram per pound of the dog's weight, three times a day. Feed the dog a chicken broth, or boiled chicken and rice as the food is easy to digest.

If the rash does not go away, and she doesn't return to normal health in twenty four hours, go to the vet.

It has been a week since my dog received her rabies shot. I took her to the Vet and the Vet suggested maybe it was an allergic reaction to the shot. She gave me some pain pills and gave my dog a shot. After the shot for a few days she seems to be getting better. But the last few days she seems to be putting most her of weight on her front two legs. Her front paws are swollen. Should I take her back to the Vet.?
