This will depend on the size of your bitch, and if there are any complications. Academic literature used by veterinary professionals who are training up in the industry suggests that the typical labor period is between nine and 18 hours, and this means that you have a long day ahead of you once the symptoms begin to appear! If there are complications, there may also be pregnancies that last in excess of 60 hours, but you will be able to contact experts for support in these extreme circumstances.

Make sure you watch out for marked changes in behavior that are presented by your dog. They may begin to pace, or will have started gathering blankets that may be around the house as an instinctive form of nesting. If your dog has been shaking, or doesn’t appear to be hungry, you shouldn’t be alarmed - however, it’s important to ensure that the bitch can remain hydrated throughout the process of labor. Shaking can be related to the fact that a canine’s temperature drops notably once labor has commenced, dropping by up to 3.5 degrees F in many cases.

There are other visible symptoms that won’t be as subjective as a temperature decrease or a mood change. For example, dogs will begin to start lactating in anticipation of the dog being born. Further, there will also be vaginal discharge that could be green in color. This may not appear to be healthy or normal, but you shouldn’t be alarmed as it is a common accompaniment of labor.

It can last a few hours or up to 12 hours depending on how many pups it is having or the breed of the dog and is this the first time. Pups should come out about 5 min. To an hour apart. If they are coming later than that you might call your vet just to make sure.

Much like with humans, it varies from dog to dog.  I think it is something like 2 to 4 hours.  If your dog seems to be having complications, you may want to contact the vet and make sure everything is ok.
