Male cats experience a syndrome called FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease). The big concern is that these cats can develop a blockage of the lower urinary tract. A bladder stone or mucous plug blocks the urethra and the cat cannot urinate at all. Please make sure your cat is still producing urine--if not do not wait until tomorrow have him seen now. The inability to urinate is an emergency.
Some cats have an underlying urinary tract infection or bladder stones that lead to obstruction. Most cats do not have an infection or stone--they have a sterile (non-infectious) cystitis (inflammation of the bladder). Usually sterile cystitis is stress related. Talk to your veterinarian about causes of stress in cats and steps to prevent obstruction. Some cats have an abnormal pH of the urine and form crystals in the urine. Diet change and environmental management are typically the first steps in dealing with this condition.
