It would be best to have your dog examined by a veterinarian.  Bacteria, yeast, or both can cause an ear infection.  Ear mites can also cause discharge from the ears.  Your veterinarian will also make sure there is not a foreign body--like a foxtail or grass awn in the ear canal.  It is important to know what you are treating so treatment works.  Some treatment is not appropriate if the ear drum has ruptured--your veterinarian will make sure the ear drum is intact.
Allergies often lead to recurrent ear infections.  If you dog has allergies the ear infection will continue to return until the allergies are better controlled.  Your veterinarian can put together a treatment plan for allergies--allergies are about control not cure.
If you know it is a yeast infection Monistat can be used topically in the ear canals--apply a small amount twice daily for 1 week.

What if the dog who has an ear infection will not let you place anything in or around the ear? What do you do then?

I would ask your veterinarian for a demonstration. Topical medications are the main stay of treatment for ear infections. A less ideal situation would be for your veterinarian to clean the ears then start an oral antibiotic--if it is a bacterial ear infection. Yeast infections are really better treated topically.

My dogs ears smelled terrible and his skin was bad. Hundreds of dollars later and he wasn't fixed. Somewhere online I read about yeast infection in dogs and the benefits of raw apple cider vinegar. It cures from the inside out. He is beautiful again and smells good. Fleas don't like. Read up, it really works.

Do you feed the raw apple cider vinegar to the dog or apply it topically? Is it supposed to be diluted?
