My german sheperd is 9 months old and has what looks like dry skin around the nose flap ?
Hip displasia is the main one. This is a broad umbrella term for a range of hip problems, all caused fundamentally by a misalignment in the hip joint. Hip displasia usually leads to lameness in older animals. In severe cases the animal may feel both significant pain and paralysis in the back limbs. Joint problems in the front limbs (elbow displasia) are also common.
Panosteitis (a bone growth probelm characterised by inflammation of bones in legs), especially in males.
Autoimmune disorders in this breed:
Anal furunculosis,
Cutaneous vasculopathy,
Pancreatic insufficiency (can be treated reasonably well, though)
Any deep chested dog like the Alsatian will be susceptible to gastric torsion (or bloat) where food gets caught in the upper intestines; this can be life-threatening and is best avoided by feeding the animal two smaller meals rather than one large meal per day.
Congenital heart disease, haemophilia A (in male dogs), epilepsy, CDRM (like multiple schlerosis) and skin disorders also occur relatively frequently.
