The act of spawning is laying and fertilizing the eggs. A female will pass over a smooth object, a rock, leaves, smooth stream bed, a dug nest, laying eggs as she passes. The male will swim behind her, stimulating her by prodding her side, and release sperm over top of the eggs. This is spawning.
Prior to spawning the female will challenge all males to a fight/wrestling match to choose the strongest most virile male. Once that is decided they will seclude themselves and protect an area that will be meticulously cleaned in preparing for the spawning.
