Stages of labor in all dogs are three. During first stage uterine contractions start and dog can shake and show restlessness and pacing along with loss of appetite. This stage can last for 6-24 hours. After this second stage of labor starts when puppies are born. After the birth of first puppy, there is a resting period that can be of 2 hours. Then third stage of labor starts followed during which placenta is expelled. After this dog go again in the second stage of labor and birth of second puppy takes place followed by removal of placenta. Both these second and third stages can last for 2-6 hours depending upon litter size.

You are likely to need your vet's assistance and need to monitor her VERY closely. If first stage lasts more than 24 hours call your vet. If there are no pups (30 minutes) soon after the water breaks call your vet. If there is black or green fluid call your vet. If there is bright red fluid for more than a few minutes call your vet. If there is a break of more than an hour in between pups call your vet. If a pup is in the canal for more than 10 minutes call your vet. Pushing for more than 10 or 15 minutes call your vet. Make sure she deliveries all the placenta's. There needs to be one per pup and she can eat a few but too many will cause diarrhea. If the number of pups doesn't match the ultrasound or x-ray (they are usually pretty accurate, most often completely but if not within one or two) call your vet. She should be examined within 24 hours after birth. I wish you luck and safety for your girl.
