Why is my dog bleeding from the mouth?

You will need to take your dog to the vet straight away, as this could be the sign of a major problem with your pet.

A veterinary practice will be able to undertake a thorough examination, and determine why your dog is bleeding from the mouth.

The vet should be able to perform either emergency surgery, or prescribe medication straight away to rectify the problem.

  • Trauma: Your pet may have been wounded in the mouth, or head region, and this is what is causing the bleeding.
  • Dental problem: If your dog is elderly, it may be experiencing dental problems, which can sometimes cause the teeth and/or gums to bleed.
  • Oral tumour: Oral tumours will need to be treated immediately, before they can spread to other areas of the animal's body.
  • Coagulation disorders: Coagulation disorders are as a result of a more serious condition with your pet. These may cause your dog to bleed from the mouth.
All of the above will need to be treated by a vet, and I highly recommend that you take your dog to the vet straight away.
