Heavy breathing in dogs can be normal under some conditions and abnormal in other conditions. Heavy breathing under certain conditions like after exercise, hot weather and nervous conditions is normal. If your dog is breathing heavily then there are 2 possibilities. These are pain/discomfort and lack of oxygen. Pain can be due to skeletal problems, disc injury, traumatic injury, damage and inflammation of the tissues etc.

Oxygen deficiency can be due to heart &, lungs diseases, trauma, pneumonia, fluid in lungs, bleeding in lungs, and obstruction of air passage. It will be good to see a vet for differential diagnosis and treatment.
